Digital Accessibility Compliance Deadline Extended

The federal DOJ has published an interim ruling that pushes ADA Title II digital accessibility compliance deadlines back by one year. For state organizations in Georgia, this means the new potential deadline is April 26, 2027. As always, we encourage you to consult with your general counsel for guidance with this interim ruling. 

There will be a 60-day period until June 22, 2026, where the public may submit comments. Possible outcomes could include the extension becoming permanent or retroactively setting the deadline as the original April 24, 2026. We will keep you updated as we learn more.

What is certain is that this update merely changes the timeline. It does not change the importance of accessible digital services, or the value of the great changes we've all achieved. Public entities still have an obligation to make digital services accessible, with Georgia having set the state standard using  WCAG 2.1 AA requirements years ago.

In many ways, this interim ruling creates something beneficial: more time to do the work well, to document the new processes that we are undertaking, and to build in sustainable business practices for equitable access.
